Cookie Policy

This page explains what this website stores in your browser. The short version is that if you are reading about a roof lantern and never log in, the site itself is storing almost nothing.

What is actually set

WordPress administration cookies. These are set only after a successful login to the admin area, which means us rather than you. If you have never logged in here, you will never have one.

A test cookie at the login screen, set for a moment purely to check whether your browser accepts cookies at all. It expires when you close the browser.

Hosting layer cookies. A page cache or a security filter sometimes sets a short lived cookie to decide whether to serve you a stored copy of a page or a fresh one. These are functional, they expire quickly, and they hold a flag rather than anything about you.

What is not set

No advertising cookies. No cross site tracking. No social media pixels. No analytics at the time of writing. If analytics are added later, this page is updated first and a consent mechanism is added before anything loads.

The enquiry form

The enquiry form is provided by an external customer management system. It may set cookies of its own to keep your entries if you navigate away mid way through. Those are functional rather than advertising cookies.

Server logs

The company hosting this website keeps ordinary server logs recording requests, IP addresses, timestamps and browser identifiers. That is a normal part of running a web server and is used for security and for diagnosing faults rather than for tracking anybody across the internet. Logs are separate from cookies and are held by the host under its own arrangements and its own retention period.

Controlling cookies

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies, usually under settings for privacy or site data. Blocking everything will not break this site for an ordinary visitor, because nothing here depends on a cookie to show you a page.

What we actually set

This site is deliberately light on tracking. There is no advertising network, no social media pixel, no session recording and nothing that follows you to other websites.

Strictly necessary cookies

A small number of cookies are needed for the site to work at all. They remember your cookie preferences so you are not asked on every page, keep an enquiry form working while you are filling it in, and carry the security token that protects form submissions from being forged.

These do not require consent because the site cannot function without them, and they hold no information that identifies you personally.

Analytics

Where analytics are enabled, they tell us which pages are read, roughly where visitors arrive from, and which devices are used. We use that to decide what to write next and to find pages that are broken.

Analytics cookies are only set if you accept them. If you decline, the site works identically and we simply know less about how it is used. IP addresses are anonymised where the platform supports it, and we do not combine analytics data with enquiry data to build a profile of an individual.

Embedded content

Some pages may embed a map or a video hosted elsewhere. Where they do, that provider can set its own cookies once the content loads, exactly as if you had visited their site directly. We have no control over those cookies and their own policies apply to them. Where we can, we load such content only after you interact with it.

What we do not do

We do not sell data, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not use cookies to retarget you with adverts elsewhere on the internet. If you fill in an enquiry form we will use the details to answer the enquiry, and that is a separate matter from cookies, covered in our privacy policy.

Managing cookies

You can change your choice at any time using the cookie settings link in the footer. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, which every current browser allows under privacy or security options. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop the enquiry form working, but nothing else on the site will break.

Clearing your cookies will also clear your recorded preference, so you will be asked again on your next visit.

Changes and questions

If we add or remove anything that sets cookies, this page is updated at the same time. If you want to know exactly what is set on your visit, every current browser will show you the full list for a site through its developer tools or site information panel, and you are welcome to ask us about anything you find there.
