Roof windows

Are roof windows noisy in rain?

Noticeable and, for most people, pleasant. In a bedroom it is worth specifying against.

Yes, audibly. A roof window is glass with nothing above it, in a roof that otherwise has tiles, felt and insulation between you and the weather.

How much

In normal rain, a background patter most people find pleasant, particularly in a loft bedroom. In heavy rain or hail it is loud enough to raise your voice under.

Against a polycarbonate rooflight, a glazed roof window is far quieter. Against the tiled roof it replaced, it is louder. Both comparisons are true and people usually mean the second.

What reduces it

A laminated pane. The interlayer damps vibration. Most roof windows have a laminated inner for safety anyway, so a well specified unit already has this.

Asymmetric glass. Panes of different thickness resonate at different frequencies, which cuts transmitted noise noticeably. A cheap upgrade and the one to ask for if noise concerns you.

Acoustic laminate. A specialist interlayer designed for sound rather than safety. It makes a real difference and costs more.

Pitch. A steeper roof presents an angled surface, so drops strike obliquely rather than square on. A window in a 45 degree roof is quieter than the same window in a 20 degree one.

What does not help

Blinds. A fabric blind inside does almost nothing for noise arriving through glass.

Over a bedroom, specify asymmetric or acoustic laminated glass at order. It cannot be changed later without changing the glass. Over a landing, kitchen or bathroom, standard specification is fine.

Louder than a wall window, quieter than a plastic dome

A roof window sits directly above the room, angled toward falling rain, so you hear it in a way you do not hear rain on a vertical window. Under ordinary rain that reads as pleasant. Under heavy rain or hail it is unmistakably present.

Whether that matters depends almost entirely on what the room is for.

What makes the difference

Laminated glass. The single most effective thing. An interlayer between two plies absorbs vibration rather than transmitting it, and it damps rain noise noticeably. Many quality units have a laminated inner pane as standard for safety reasons, which means the acoustic benefit comes free.

Acoustic laminate. A specialised interlayer that goes further. It costs a modest premium at the point of order and it cannot sensibly be added later, because the labour and access are the same as replacing the whole unit.

Pitch. A steeper roof presents a less direct target and sheds water rather than letting it strike and sit. A shallow pitch roof window is louder than a steep one.

Mass. Thicker glass is quieter. This is one of the few arguments in favour of triple glazing, though the daylight and weight penalties usually outweigh it.

The reveal. A plastered reveal reflects sound into the room; a soft finish absorbs some. Marginal, but real.

Where to specify acoustic glass

Over a bedroom, particularly in a loft conversion where the window is close above the bed. Over a study or a home office where concentration matters.

Not over a kitchen, a bathroom or a landing, where most people find the sound of rain rather pleasant and the premium is not earned.

The other noise sources

Thermal ticking. A glazed unit expands and contracts with temperature, and on a cold clear night after a warm day some installations make occasional small noises as the frame moves. Normal, not a fault, and it settles as an installation beds in.

Wind. A poorly seated sash whistles. That is a gasket or an adjustment issue rather than an inherent property of the window, and it is worth reporting rather than living with.

Blinds. An external awning in wind can rattle if it is not properly tensioned.

The honest summary

Any glazed roof will be audible in heavy rain. Acoustic laminate reduces it substantially and does not eliminate it, and the decision is worth making at order stage over a bedroom and skipping everywhere else.

What to specify, by room

Over a bedroom or a study: acoustic laminate. It costs a modest premium at the point of order and it cannot sensibly be added later, because the labour and access are the same as replacing the glazing.

Over a kitchen, bathroom, hallway or landing: standard glazing. Most people find the sound of rain on a roof window rather pleasant, and the premium is not earned.

If a window is already in and the noise bothers you, there is no cheap retrofit. Reglazing costs nearly as much as a replacement because most of the cost is the access.

What does help a little is soft furnishing in the room and a blind, both of which absorb some of the reflected sound. Neither is a solution and both are cheaper than glass.

Less than a lantern, and more than a wall window

A pitched roof window sits at an angle, so rain strikes it at a glancing rather than square angle, which is quieter than a horizontal unit. But it is still glass above your head in a room with no ceiling between.

In a loft bedroom, where the window is close to the bed and the room is small, it is more noticeable than the same window on a landing.

The specification that quietens it

Laminated glass, and specifically an acoustic laminate with a formulated interlayer. The interlayer damps vibration rather than transmitting it. This is the most effective single measure and it is specified at order.

Asymmetric panes. Two panes of different thickness do not resonate together, which breaks up transmission. A small specification change with a real effect.

A blackout blind. Modest, but it does soften the sound as well as the light, and in a bedroom it is going in anyway.

Measures that disappoint

Triple glazing with three similar panes. It does less for acoustics than making two panes different thicknesses.

Anything applied to the outside of the glass, which is where the impact happens.

The decision worth making early

Glass specification cannot be changed later without replacing the unit, and the marginal cost at order is modest.

If the window is going into a bedroom and anybody in the household sleeps lightly, take the acoustic laminate. It is the one upgrade people most often wish they had specified, and the one they cannot add.

On a landing, a study or a bathroom, it is rarely worth it.
