Energy efficient rooflights

Do solar control rooflights make a room dark?

Slightly less bright, and not dark. The coating is selective: it targets heat rather than light.

A little less light, and nothing like the reduction people expect. Modern solar control coatings are selective: they reflect infrared, which is heat, while transmitting most visible light.

The numbers

Clear double glazing transmits around 75 to 80 per cent of visible light. A typical solar control unit transmits around 60 to 70 per cent.

That is a real reduction and it is far smaller than the reduction in heat, which is the point of the coating.

Why you do not notice

Because the eye adapts logarithmically. A ten per cent reduction in daylight is imperceptible in use; you would only see it comparing two identical rooms side by side.

What you do notice is the room being comfortable in July.

The tint

Some products carry a very light grey or blue-green cast, visible against clear glass on a sample table and not visible once the unit is in a roof.

If it concerns you, ask for a neutral coating. Most manufacturers offer one, and the difference in performance is small.

Where you should not fit it

North facing rooflights. There is no direct sun to control, so it reduces daylight and delivers no benefit. Specify for U-value alone and take the saving.

That is the one situation where solar control is genuinely the wrong choice, and it is also the situation where it gets specified by default because somebody put it on the whole quotation.

Not solar control glass against clear glass. It is solar control glass against clear glass with a blind permanently closed, which is what people end up doing in a room that overheats.

A blind closed all summer removes far more daylight than any coating.

Modern solar control coatings are selective: they reflect a large proportion of the infrared energy that carries heat while transmitting most of the visible light that you actually see by.

A typical solar control rooflight transmits somewhere around 60 to 70 percent of visible light, against perhaps 75 to 80 percent for a clear unit of the same construction. That is a real reduction and it is not the dramatic one people imagine when they hear tinted.

What you notice in the room

Very little in terms of brightness. What you do notice is less glare, because the sharp edge is taken off direct sun, and a slight change in the colour of the light: most solar control glass reads as a faint neutral or blue grey cast rather than the bronze tint of older products.

Looking at the roof from outside, the pane reads as slightly more reflective. On a lantern with many panes that is more visible than on a single rooflight.

A great deal, which is the point. A large rooflight facing south or west without solar control makes a room uncomfortable on a July afternoon, and no amount of internal blind fixes it properly, because an internal blind stops the heat after it has already entered the room.

Solar control works before the glass, permanently, with no maintenance and nothing to break.

Where not to specify it

North facing slopes. There is no direct sun at all, the light is even and glare free through the day, and solar control makes a good room slightly darker while delivering nothing.

Small rooflights in cool rooms. A modest unit in a north or east facing bathroom is not an overheating risk.

Anywhere daylight is genuinely scarce and heat is not a problem, such as a north lit workshop or a stairwell.

Where to specify it without hesitation

Any south or west facing unit of reasonable size. Any near horizontal flat roof rooflight or lantern, because a horizontal pane has no orientation to shelter behind and collects the midday sun directly. And any glazed extension on a modern airtight house, which holds heat readily.

The comparison worth making

It costs a modest premium at the point of order and a great deal to change afterwards, because the labour and the access are identical either way. Coming back for the glass alone later costs nearly as much as the original installation.

Against that, a slight reduction in winter daylight. In practice the trade is worth making on any sunward facing unit and not worth making on a north facing one.

Less than people expect

A good solar control coating is selective. It works hardest on the near infrared part of the spectrum, which is where most of the heat is, and passes considerably more of the visible light.

So the reduction in heat is much greater than the reduction in brightness. That selectivity is the whole point of the product, and it is what separates it from a plain tint, which cuts both equally.

What you will actually notice

A slight tint, most visible when looking through the glass at a white cloud or a pale sky. Some products give a faint colour cast to the light entering the room, usually towards blue or green.

Whether that matters depends on the room. In a kitchen or a living space it goes unnoticed within a week. In a studio where colour rendering matters, it is worth seeing a sample against a white surface before committing.

The right thing to compare it against

Not solar control glass against clear glass, but a usable room against an unusable one.

A large lantern in clear glass over a south facing kitchen produces a room that is bright and, for several hours on a hot day, avoided. The blinds go down, and a room with the blinds down is darker than the same room with solar control glass and the blinds up.

Specify for the orientation. On a north facing slope, prioritise light and skip the coating. On anything facing south or west, and on any horizontal lantern, take the solar control.

What does more

External shading stops the energy before it reaches the glass, which no coating can match, and it can be retracted when you want the light.
