Walk-on rooflights

How strong is a walk-on rooflight?

Rated to a stated load, and built so that breaking the top ply is not a failure.

Rated to a specified load over a specified area, and the rating is chosen at design stage from what will actually happen on it.

Typical ratings

Domestic foot traffic is generally assessed at around 1.5 kN per square metre. A balcony or terrace carrying furniture and people is 2.5 or more. Both are distributed loads.

Point loads are checked separately, and they are the harder case: a person on one heel concentrates a lot of force into a very small area, and glass is more sensitive to that than to weight spread evenly.

The build up

Several toughened plies bonded with structural interlayers, typically 40mm to 60mm overall.

The design principle is redundancy. If the top ply breaks, the plies beneath still carry the load and the panel stays in place. That is the safety case, and it is why the build up cannot be thinned to save money.

What it is not rated for

Vehicles, unless specifically designed for it, which is rare domestically. Scaffold legs or props bearing directly on the glass, which happens more often than it should when later work is done above.

Dropped point impacts, such as a tool falling from height, which are the most likely cause of damage in practice.

Be honest at survey

Planters, furniture with small feet, whether anyone will stand on it to clean windows above, and whether it is a daily route or an occasional one.

The rating cannot be increased later. Uprating means a new panel and usually new structure beneath it.

Stronger than the floor it sits in

A walk on rooflight is designed to a stated imposed load, the same way any floor is. For a domestic terrace that is typically the same figure a timber floor in a house is designed to, and frequently higher.

The build up is three or more plies of toughened glass bonded with structural interlayers. Toughened glass is several times stronger than ordinary annealed glass, and laminating multiple plies together produces a composite considerably stronger again.

The safety case is about failure, not strength

This is the part worth understanding, because it is why walk on glazing is laminated rather than simply thick.

Toughened glass, when it does break, breaks completely and instantly into small fragments. A single thick toughened pane used as a floor would go from intact to gone in a moment, which is unacceptable in a floor.

A laminated stack behaves differently. If one ply breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments and the remaining plies carry the load. The surface stays in place as something you can stand on and walk off, and the damage is visible so it can be dealt with.

That is the entire reason for the construction, and it is why nobody makes a monolithic walk on rooflight.

What the specification does not cover

Point loads. A heavy planter or a furniture leg standing in one place is a different loading case from a person walking across. The design assumed the second one.

Vehicles. A completely different order of load, applied dynamically and repeatedly, with turning as well as rolling. A pedestrian walk on unit must never be used where a vehicle will cross it.

Impact. Something heavy dropped point first can chip the top ply. That is not a structural failure and it is worth reporting, because a damaged surface is a wearing surface with less margin.

How to know what you have

The manufacturer’s specification, in writing, for the loading the unit will actually see. Not the appearance: a thick pane looks reassuring and tells you nothing.

Where it cannot be established, treat it as not walk on. We will not certify an existing unit as trafficable because it looks robust.

The two lower specifications

Non fragile means a person falling onto it will not go through. It is a life safety requirement, not a traffic rating, and it costs a fraction of walk on glazing. Most flat roof rooflights should be non fragile.

Standard rooflights are neither, and should not be stood on at all.

What to ask for in writing

The manufacturer’s stated imposed load for the unit, and confirmation that it matches the use. A domestic terrace is one figure; a commercial or public route is higher and brings different safety requirements.

Whether anything heavy will stand on it permanently, because a point load in one position is a different case from people walking across, and it has to be designed for rather than assumed.

And confirmation that the structure below has been checked to carry it, with the engineer’s design where one was needed.

Appearance tells you nothing here. A thick pane looks reassuring and is not evidence of anything, and where the specification cannot be established in writing the honest position is to treat the unit as not walk on.

Strength is specified, not standard

There is no single figure, because the glass build up comes out of a structural calculation for the particular installation rather than off a shelf.

Four inputs drive it: the unsupported span, the design load for the actual use, the point load case, and the deflection limit. Change any of them and the glass changes.

Span matters most. It is why a small unit is far cheaper per square metre than a large one.

How it fails safely

This matters more than the headline number.

The unit is laminated: structural plies bonded together with interlayers. If a ply breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments in place so the pane stays put and continues to carry load rather than dropping into the space below.

That is a fundamentally different failure mode from ordinary glass and it is what makes these units safe to have people on.

The top layer is sacrificial by design. It takes the grit, the scratches and the dropped objects, and it is not the layer that stops you falling through.

Stiffness matters as much

A pane that is strong enough but flexes noticeably underfoot feels unsafe, and it works the perimeter seal every time somebody crosses it. Engineers design to a deflection limit for exactly that reason.

The distinction to hold onto

Non fragile is a fall protection classification for an accidental one off event, protecting somebody working on a roof. Walk on means designed and certified for repeated foot traffic as a floor. They are not the same rating and a non fragile unit used as a floor will fail.
