Do roof windows come with blinds?
Not included, but designed for. Fitting them at installation is neater and cheaper than later.
Part of our Roof Window Installation guide
Blinds are almost never included in the price of the window. They are an accessory designed for it, with brackets that locate into the frame, so a blind made for your unit fits precisely rather than being fixed over it.
The types

Blackout. Opaque fabric in side channels that block light at the edges. The only type that genuinely darkens a room, and essential in a loft bedroom, particularly east facing where June sunrise is around a quarter to five.
Pleated. Translucent, diffuses light and gives privacy without darkness. Good on a landing or in a bathroom.
Roller. Simple, cheaper, various fabrics. No side channels so light leaks at the edges.
Venetian. Directional control, useful in a study where you want light without glare on a screen.
Awning. External mesh outside the glass. Unusual domestically and the most effective at stopping heat, because it stops the energy before it reaches the glass.
Why at installation

The brackets locate into the frame, and doing that with the window out or freshly fitted is quicker and neater. It usually costs less as part of the order than as a separate visit later.
If the window is above reach, an electric blind needs a power feed, and running that at first fix is trivial where doing it later is not.
Blinds are not the answer to overheating

An internal blind stops light, but the solar energy has already passed the glass. The blind absorbs it and re-radiates it into the room as heat.
For a room that overheats, solar control glass does far more, and it needs no operation. Specify the glass first and add blinds for privacy, glare or blackout.
Not included, but designed for

Blinds are almost always a separate purchase. What mass market roof windows do give you is a frame designed to accept them: clips or channels built into the sash so a blind fits exactly, goes on without tools, and needs no separate brackets.
That is worth more than it sounds. A made to measure blind fitted to a plaster reveal costs considerably more, never sits as neatly, and leaves gaps at the sides that a purpose made roof blind does not.
Choosing between the blind types

Blackout. Opaque fabric running in side channels so light does not leak past the edges. This is the one that matters over a bedroom, and it genuinely blacks out rather than dimming.
Pleated or translucent. Diffuses light and gives privacy without darkness. Good over a bathroom or a landing.
Venetian. Adjustable slats, useful where you want to direct light rather than block it.
External awning. A mesh fitted over the outside of the glass. Different in kind from the others and far more effective against heat, because it intercepts the sun before it reaches the glass rather than after it has entered the room.
Internal against external, which is the real decision

An internal blackout blind controls light and privacy and does relatively little about heat. By the time the blind stops the sun, the energy is already inside the room.
An external awning stops the majority of solar gain outside the glass. On a south or west facing rooflight in summer that is the difference between a usable room and an unusable one.
Where heat is the problem rather than light, solar control glazing is better still, because it works permanently, needs no maintenance and cannot break.
Manual or motorised

Manual blinds are operated by hand or with a pole. Above about two and a half metres a pole becomes a chore and the blind stops being adjusted.
Motorised blinds are available in mains and solar versions, and on a solar powered opening rooflight a solar blind runs from its own panel too, which avoids a second wiring question.
Conservation rooflights

Steel conservation units generally do not carry the clip in accessory ranges that mass market roof windows do, so blinds become a separate made to measure item fitted to the reveal. Budget for it at the start rather than discovering it at the end.
When to order
With the window. Blinds are matched to the model and size code, so ordering them together removes any risk of a mismatch, and fitting them at the same visit costs nothing extra.
Retrofitting later is entirely possible and it means another visit and another access arrangement.
Not included, and made for the window
Blinds are ordered separately, and they are size specific accessories built to the window size code rather than generic products cut to fit.
That is a genuine advantage. A manufacturer blind clips onto brackets on the frame, needs no drilling or measuring, goes on in minutes, and fits exactly because it was made for that frame.
Why frame mounted matters
Two reasons.
The side channels. A blind on a raked window cannot hang, so it runs in channels that hold the fabric against the glass along its whole travel. Those channels are what make blackout actually black out, because light cannot leak down the edges.
And rotation. A centre pivot window turns on its axis to open. A frame mounted blind travels with the sash and keeps working. A blind fixed to the plaster reveal does not, and it obstructs the window every time you use it.
Order them with the window
Fitted at installation, while the fitter is already there and already at height, a blind adds very little to a job that is happening anyway.
Fitted later it means a ladder on a finished floor, working overhead above furniture, or a call out for one small task. In a stairwell it may need a tower.
The types, briefly
Blackout for bedrooms, in side channels. Roller for landings and studies. Pleated where you want light without a view in. Venetian in bathrooms and kitchens where humidity would affect fabric. Awning on the outside for solar gain, which is the only one that stops heat before it enters.
