Can rooflights be fitted in winter?

Yes. The roof is open for hours and it is weathertight before we leave.

Yes, and most of our replacement work happens outside the summer. The roof is open for a few hours, not days, and it is made watertight before we leave whatever stage the job has reached.

What stops work

Driving rain. Not drizzle, which is workable, but sustained rain arriving horizontally.

High wind. Handling glass at height in gusts is unsafe and a sheet of glass is an effective sail.

Ice on the roof. Purely a safety matter.

Cold alone is not a problem. Sealants and tapes have working temperature ranges and we use products rated for the conditions.

We will move a date

Rather than work through weather badly. A rescheduled visit is an inconvenience; a roof opened in driving rain is water in a ceiling and a rushed detail.

When we call at short notice to move a day, that is the reason.

Winter advantages

Shorter lead times, because it is a quieter season.

Immediate benefit. A failing rooflight is at its worst in winter, so the improvement is felt straight away.

It gets tested. A replacement done in July is not proven until October.

Bigger jobs

New openings, rebuilt kerbs and enlarged openings leave the roof open longer, and those we prefer to schedule against a settled forecast rather than starting and hoping.

Heating

The room will be cold while the opening is formed. Worth planning around in a room with somebody at home all day.

We fit rooflights all year. Winter is a normal working season in this trade and there is no seasonal surcharge.

What changes is the judgement about when to start, and there is one rule that governs everything: an opening is never left uncovered overnight, and a strip out does not begin if the forecast will not allow the roof to be closed and made watertight the same day.

In this part of the country that occasionally costs us a day. It has never cost a customer a ceiling, and we would rather move a date than take a risk with an open roof.

What is actually different in winter

Shorter working days. A job that fits comfortably into daylight in June is tighter in December. On a one day replacement that rarely matters. On a larger job it means the work is planned in stages that each finish watertight.

Drying times. Plaster takes longer to dry in a cold house, so where making good involves plastering, allow more time before decorating. That is a scheduling point rather than a quality one.

Wind rather than rain. Rain is manageable. Sustained high wind is what stops roof work, because handling large panes and sheet materials at height becomes unsafe. That is a genuine reason a date moves and it is not negotiable.

Frost. Slates and old clay tiles are more brittle in hard frost and a higher proportion breaks on removal. On a historic covering it is worth waiting for milder weather.

Why winter is sometimes the better time

Availability. Spring through early autumn is the busiest period, largely because that is when people plan extensions and loft conversions. Booking winter work usually means a shorter wait.

It is also when the benefit is most obvious. A room that was dark and cold in November is transformed by a new unit with a low emissivity coating, argon fill and a warm edge spacer replacing something fitted twenty five years ago with none of them.

Living with it while the work happens

The room being worked on is unusable for the day, and it will be cold while the opening is out. We contain the work with dust barriers, cover floors and sheet furniture, and we close up before we leave.

On a replacement the roof is open for a matter of hours rather than days. On a new opening it is longer, and that is planned around the weather rather than pushed through it.

Urgent winter work

Where water is already coming in, say so. Making a roof watertight temporarily is frequently the right first step, because it buys time to specify the permanent repair properly rather than ordering the wrong unit in a hurry in December.

What we will not do

Start a strip out when the forecast will not allow the roof to be closed and made watertight the same day, or work at height in sustained high wind.

Both of those occasionally move a date by a day or two. Neither is negotiable, and we would rather tell you that at booking than on the morning.

Ask us

Winter availability is usually better than spring, so if you are flexible on timing it is worth asking what dates we have. There is no seasonal premium either way.

Old coverings in frost

Slates and old clay tiles are more brittle in hard frost and a higher proportion breaks on removal. On a historic roof where matching weathered tile is difficult, it is worth waiting for milder weather rather than losing tiles that cannot be replaced like for like. We will say so rather than pushing on.

One last point

Wind stops roof work more often than rain does, because handling glazing and sheet materials at height becomes unsafe. That is a genuine reason a date moves and it is not negotiable.

Yes, with conditions

Rooflights go in through the winter routinely. What matters is the weather on the specific day rather than the season.

The requirement is simple: the roof must be opened and closed within the working day, and it must not be opened in conditions where that cannot be guaranteed. No responsible installer opens a roof they cannot close.

What actually stops work

High wind, which makes working at height unsafe and makes handling a large unit dangerous. This stops more jobs than rain does.

Ice and frost on the covering, which makes a roof genuinely treacherous.

Persistent heavy rain, because the interior is exposed while the opening is formed.

Snow, both for access and because the covering cannot be worked.

What is affected but not prevented

Plaster takes longer to dry in cold damp conditions, so the decorating tail is longer.

Sealants and adhesives have minimum application temperatures, and a competent installer works within them rather than around them.

The advantage

Availability. Winter is quieter, scaffold is easier to get, and dates are more flexible than they are in high summer.
